Whippets have a fine coat and rarely need bathing. Unlike many other dog breeds, they do not suffer from being smelly, unless, of course they roll in something unsavoury!
Whippets like to spend much of their day sleeping somewhere warm and comfortable, unless of course they are indulging in running at speeds of up to 35 kms an hour over a short distance.
Whippets are a very gentle, but social dog breed who bond closely with their humans and are good with other pets. They are extremely loyal and make ideal companions.
Whippets are increasingly finding their place within nursing homes, schools and hospitals as a gentle, calming dog breed, that seldom cause problems with allergy sufferers and are patient and rarely, if ever, agressive with people.
Whippets make excellent personal trainers for humans who need regular exercise like walking, but lack the self discipline to undertake this activity for themselves. Your whippet will remind you when it's exercise time and even bring your coat and walking shoes to you in anticipation of a brisk walk around the block or local park. A whippet will only accept excuses if he or she notices you are unwell!
Because whippets rarely bark, they make exceptional watch dogs, not in the guard dog sense, but alerting you if something or someone is out of order in or near your home. On the two occasions my whippet has barked loudly at night I should have taken more notice and acted to prevent unwanted crimes in the neighbourhood. One such time a neighbour was being burgled. The other, a fox was in my chicken coop, devastating my flock!
My whippet also comes to my side to check I am okay if I ever cough. He always makes me relax and often laugh when I arrive home to him, being very adept as a human de-stressor. He insists I live in the moment and never holds a grudge if I let him down occasionally!
If you want a dog that will care for you to reciprocate the care you give it, a Whippet could be your ideal pet!
